If you are into the Indian creator economy or startup sphere, you know about this 22-year-old Crorepati and Social Media Influencer. He has openly shared his story to encourage the potential in the millions of Indian teenagers discouraged from not getting into IITs or NITs. He recently dropped out of BITS Pilani Goa Campus in his 3rd year of college. In this article, we share his story in and out to inspire you to change the future and help the country.

School Life

Ishan studied at Ryan International School in Noida. He credits himself as a decent kid going to school. In his 8th class, he demanded the newly launched Moto E First Generation from his father. It cost around 7,000 rupees at that time. But just like any other Asian father, he flipped the deal to demand a 10 CGPA in his 12th grade in exchange for the smartphone. Today, in response, his parents attribute these hard-fought targets to his massive success.

IIT-JEE Period

Ishan Sharma studied at a reputed coaching institute for IIT-JEE and worked very hard for the JEE exam for 2 to 3 years. Even after a sincere effort to crack JEE Mains and Advanced, he was only able to crack the JEE Mains Cutoff of 2019. He did not qualify in JEE Advanced, therefore getting rejected by all the IITs (Indian Institute of Technology).

Ishan tributes the JEE Advanced result date to be a turning point, more like a starting point for this journey to scale his potential. Although his parents were disappointed as he could not make it to the IITs, they tried their best to cheer him up for what is next for him. Thereafter, he gave the BITSAT (BITS Admission Test) and the Vellore Institute of Technology Engineering Entrance Examination (VITEEE). After a good score in BITSAT, he got admitted into the BITS Pilani Goa Campus. He majored in Electrical Engineering.

Ishan Sharma’s YouTube Journey

Ishan decided to move on with the past and decided to upskill himself and he was motivated by creators like Aman Dhattarwal who produced great content back then as well for students. He decided to learn coding to make the most out of his college life. So right after his JEE Advanced result, He started learning a very beginner-friendly language Python via a Udemy course. He also started reading a lot of books. So he was learning through books and building projects with python.

By the end of July 2019, Ishan arrived in Goa, where he was (probably) going to spend his next 4 years. There, he tried to maximize learning by joining clubs, started making friends, and understanding career opportunities and how things work. Although he was very disappointed with his JEE result, he made sure that it didn’t hinder his performance in his career. He was learning about data science, machine learning, and related frameworks.

However, the wind didn’t always flow his way. He was distracted by the freedom he got in college and the hostel. He was independent and alone because in college nobody tells you what to do. He fell into watching web series and watching movies in the first one or two months. After his mid-sem examination, he did not perform according to his expectations and regretted wasting a lot of time. He then sincerely focused on developing his skills and started learning machine learning.

Ishan Sharma in Programming

Thereafter, when he got his summer break and came back to his home, he started consuming content from creators like BeerBiceps, Gary Vee, etc. He discarded machine learning because training models, learning about them, or reading research papers took a lot of time. So he took a pause in learning machine learning and got into web development. He learned HTML, CSS, and Javascript by December. He also learned about social media marketing along with web development.

Finally, in December 2019, he started his own podcast with the aim to share stories of his college mates which would be valuable to people who don’t have access to strategies or ideas. Ishan took around 5 hours of shooting, editing, and posting time for his introductory podcast. He launched it on Spotify, but as soon as he found out that people around him preferred video content on YouTube, therefore, he put his podcast on youtube. He posted a new video each Sunday. But then, the pandemic hit.

After Pandemic

When Ishan moved back to his house during the pandemic, he had a lot of free time. He invested all of that time to upload YouTube videos and was simultaneously posting content on Linkedin. He learned a lot about Linkedin and grew there as well. He also attended a lot of webinars also.

Ishan published an Ebook titled “Crush It on Linkedin” on the 12th of July, 2020. He Gave away the first 4000 copies to everyone for free. He claims to have had a lot of time even after running his youtube channel and studies. He got an internship as a Facebook Ads Manager. At this point, he was not attending any college lectures. He was just focusing on the internship and the youtube channel. As you may be expecting, he left that internship in 5 days to focus on building his own company as the internship took up a lot of his own time for just 5000 rupees per month.

Thereafter, he applied for internships to gain experience. He was approached by Unacademy to teach Python. AbleJOBS and GeeksForGeeks also wanted him to make videos on their channel after looking at his videos on his channel. He started a venture called PodInfinity, which was basically a podcasting mentorship having 6 sessions with him to grow their podcasts. It didn’t go so well according to him and made around 10,000 rupees. He was also approached by Mehul Mohan, the founder of CodeDamn to work with him to grow CodeDamn. He then worked on scaling CodeDamn and tried his best to grow it through brainstorming, weekly meetings, etc.

In January 2021, Ishan left CodeDAMN, even after being offered some equity he wanted to build something on his own. In February 2021, his roommate wanted to start an agency. He thought that working for multiple companies would be a great idea and therefore they both coded their agency website named “MarkitUp”. After he launched a video on his channel, the response was impeccable. He got many clients reaching out to them and on the first day itself they got their first client. Their growth followed and they worked with 1 or 2 clients each month to strategize their social presence. They have around 15-20 employees as of now.

Ishan Sharma Dropping out of BITS Pilani Goa

Ishan Sharma dropped out of BITS because he couldn’t focus on his content creation journey and his MarkitUp agency. He requested the college administration to let him breathe or in other words to let go of his grades and assignments. College administration declined the request and thus after his collective experiences and support from fellow content creators, parents (most important), and his co-founders, he decided to take the decision of dropping out.

Ishan complains that completing his last year is not a good choice as he is on exponential growth right now and probably the most important year of his content creation journey. He claims that his finances are sorted, has great connections, and makes more money than the highest package in BITS, and self-belief.
